San Salvador is the second largest city in Central America after Guatemala
City, with a population of over 2 million one third of the population of El
Salvador. It was built by the Spanish in 1525 30km from its present location
but was moved 3 years later and again 17 years after that.
The valley where it is located was known as "the valley of the Hammocks"
due to the large amount of volcanic activity. Since it was built San Salvador
has been struck by earthquakes hundreds of time, mostly small tremors but
also a number of major earthquakes which caused considerable damage to
the city.
San Salvador today is a fairly modern city, most of its old building having
been destroyed by the earthquakes.
San Salvador has a number of banks and ATMs, several of which accept
Mastercard as well as Visa. A couple of convenient spots to withdraw money
are at the Centro Comercial San Luis on the Calle San Antonio Abad and
around the centre. There are numerous internet cafes all over the city,
most charging around US$1 per hour.
