The city of Cobán is situated in central Guatemala and
was founded in 1543 by Dominican priests. Much of

the development of the town was done 19th century by
the many German coffee farmers that immigrated
there. Most of these were deported during WWII.
Today, Cobán is not a particularly touristy town, usually
only serving as a gateway for Semuc Champey or as a
crossroads for other destinations in Guatemala.
However, there are plenty of forests, waterfalls and
caves around the town to visit. Cobán sits at an
altitude of 1320 m and the climate is cool.

There are a number of internet cafes around the main
square, most charge around US$ 1.5 an hour.

There are several banks along 1a Calle, including one
in the main square that also has an ATM.
