Just 9 km before Semuc Champey, is the small town of Lanquin. The town lives on tourism. The atmosphere is nice, the prices higher, so bargaining a little bit will be okay. The hotels and hostels are eager to sell you tours.At the moment of writing (March 2008) there are no ATMs in town or nearby. Coban is the best place to stock up on some money.Internet is avalible at the main square for Q10/hour 7am-10pm . Sights The Lanquin caves 1 km from the town centre this is a huge network of caverns, only some of which have been explored. The caves are home to thousands of bats which can be seen leaving the cave every evening at sunset. Semuc champey See Semuc Champey section. Accommodation Dont forget to look at Semuc Champey chapter for accomodation. Rabin Itzam At the first t junction in town you will find this pink coloured Hotel. Double US$ 10. El Retiro A few hundred meters down the road from Rabin Itzam is El Retiro. Little bamboo huts and a restaurant beside the river. This is the main backpacker place, its not for everyone. Their tours are more expensive and with large groups. The town has a lot of other options with good prices. |
Transport Coban Buses leave several times a day from the town centre. The journey takes around 2 hours and costs Q 30. Semuc Champey Buses leave from the town centre. The journey takes about 30 minutes and costs Q 10. You can also catch a lift from one of the locals in a pickup. Ask the price before jumping in. Another alternative is to walk the 9 km from Lanquin. If you do so make sure you take enough water and food with you. The walk will take about 3 hours. There are shortcuts along the way but check with the locals before taking them. |
