Bluefield was built in 1602 by Portuguese settlers and named after the Dutch pirate Blaufeldt, who was famous in the area at the time. For years the town was a popular port for pirates, until 1678 when the British claimed a protectorate over the Mosquito coast and made Bluefield the capital. In 1988 the town was almost destroyed by a hurricane but has since been rebuilt. Nowadays Bluefield is an interesting town, populated by a large variety of ethnic groups. The main source of income for the town is from fishing, particularly shrimp and lobster but it is also the main Caribbean port of Nicaragua and is therefore important town for exports such as hardwood. There are banks and is internet in Bluefields. |
