The Corn Islands, or Islas del Maiz, are situated 70 km from the coast of Nicaragua near the town of Bluefield. There are
two islands, Big Corn and Little Corn. They are called the Corn Islands because corn was once grown plentifully here,
but frequent hurricanes made the islands unsuitable for farming and the fields disappeared. Most of the inhabitants
live on Big Corn and make their living from fishing. Cordobas and new US Dollars are accepted everywhere.  Some
businesses will accept VISA, MasterCard, and American Express. BanPro is the only bank and is located in Brig Bay of
Big Corn Island.  They also have an ATM.  There is also a Western Union located in Brig Bay.  Traveller’s checks are not
accepted.
