Juigalpa is a small town in the centre of Nicaragua about 140km from Managua. Most people only pass through the town on their way to Bluefield in the east or San Carlos in the South but few people stop there. Juigalpa is however a quiet, pleasant town, unaffected by tourism, where the locals area simply carrying on with their daily lives. As with many towns in Nicaragua, Juigalpa is centered around its main square. The church on its north side was built by a German priest who moved to Juigalpa in the 1950s. He pulled down the old Spanish-style church and built the rather modern looking concrete structure seen today. Also in the main square is the colourful statue built in honour of the shoe shiners. After a long dusty journey this is the place to get your shoes polished. The town has a few small hotels and restaurants, as well as a museum, banks, ATM and internet cafes. Sights Museo Arqueológico Aguilar Barea Two and a half blocks north of the main square this is a small but interesting museum, famous for its collection of ancient stone stelae.
