The city of Rivas is situated in the
southwest of Nicaragua on the isthmus
between Lago de Nicaragua and the
Pacific Ocean. The area where the city
now stands was populated from around
600 AD by indiginous tribes. Nowadays
the economy of the city is based mainly
on tourism and agriculture.

Rivas is an important crossrads town
and has transport connections to
managua and the Costa Rican border as
well as the beach town of San Juan del
Sur and Isla de Ometepe. The area
around Rivas has become increasingly
popular in recent years as eco-tourism
and surfing has attracted more tourists.
There are a number of banks in town,
mostly around the centre park. There is
also one on the main highway near the
petrol station that has ATM.
