The city of Rivas is situated in the southwest of Nicaragua on the isthmus between Lago de Nicaragua and the Pacific Ocean. The area where the city now stands was populated from around 600 AD by indiginous tribes. Nowadays the economy of the city is based mainly on tourism and agriculture. Rivas is an important crossrads town and has transport connections to managua and the Costa Rican border as well as the beach town of San Juan del Sur and Isla de Ometepe. The area around Rivas has become increasingly popular in recent years as eco-tourism and surfing has attracted more tourists. There are a number of banks in town, mostly around the centre park. The journey takes around 1 and a half hours and costs US$ 1 Managua Buses every 25 minutes, takes 2 and a half hours and costs US$ 2. San Juan del Sur Buses every half hour, takes less than an hour and costs US$ 1. Sapoa (Costa Rican Border) Buses every half hour. Journey takes 1 hour and costs US$ 0.50. To San Jorge for boats to Ometepe Island you will have to take a taxi from Rivas. You should pay no more than C$15 per person. |
