Is there a problem with the temple and pyramid complexes in Central America? No
travel guide will tell you this story but we think you should know and make up your on
mind. For all popular Maya sites today like Chitchen Itza, Tikal and Copan, just to name
a few, there are a few questions that should be asked.

Is this what the mayas built?
What infomation are the  reconstructions based on?
How accurate are the buildings today?

Most of the sites were reconstructed in the last hundred and fifty years. Below you
can read about some of the people who were involved with the reconstructions of
Copan and Chitchen Itza.

Tatiana Proskouriakoff
In 1936 she was asked to join an expedition to Piedras Negras, where it was her task
to sketch the archaeological reconstructions of sites at Chiche Itza, Tikal, and
Yaxchilan.

Gustav Stromsvik
Stromsvik was working at the complex of Copan for many years. He build and
designed the Museum in the town plaza of Copan Ruinas. Stromsvik was a Captain in
the Norweigan army and was shipwrecked in the caribbean. He was taken in by a
group of archaeologists who inspired him and later he was hired by Tatiana
Proskouriakoff. On this link you will find extracts from his journal to her.
